It will enable project launching in areas like: composites, aluminium or steels

Bilbao, 30.5.2017--- AIC-Automotive Intelligence Center has opened the first integral automotive lightweight centre, called Lightweight Competence Center (LCC).

LCC is focused on the development and application of multimaterial manufacturing technologies demanded by the automotive sector, whose vehicle lightening strategy is based on new designs and use of cutting-edge materials like: composites, aluminium, high resistance steels likewise hybrid solutions.

The technological capacities of the Lightweight Center are integrated in the same space ranging from raw material characterisation to its post-process and validation.

The main reason for the manufacturers’ lightweight policy is because reduction in vehicle weight contributes to fuel consumption reduction and consequently CO2 emission; estimating a fuel consumption reduction associated with lightweight  between 4.5% and 8.0% per 100 kg. weight reduction.

Moreover, it should be borne in mind vehicle weight has increased considerably in recent decades due to the increase in size of the same coupled with the incorporation of comfort and safety elements.

In response to this trend, the LCC has state-of-the-art equipment and infrastructures to develop the technologies installed to tackle sector company needs in an integral flexible manner. So they can incorporate new materials in their processes and products to provide solutions to their customers’ demands, improving their position in the development and manufacture of high added value components.

According to the automotive industry estimates, the current global automotive cutting-edge material market is 59 billion euros increasing 13% annually from 2016 to 2021.

AIC is a foundation driven by Bizkaia Provincial Council together with the Town Councils of Amorebieta-Etxano and Ermua, a group of leading companies in the automotive sector, and ACICAE-Basque Automotive Cluster. Its structure includes: industrial innovation, training, technology and development enabling improvement in the automotive sector competitiveness. 30 organisations and over 700 people work on its premises.
